So my good friend Ashley did gasp when I posted a few weeks ago that I am liking animal heads lately. So I've been trying to explain to her the many creative ways people are doing the ole' animal head on the wall look these days. While having the privilege to thumb through design magazines at work this week I found this photo of an installation in a Chicago hotel and I was like yeeesss. After failing to give a good explanation of my vegan friendly animal head to her at bunko Wednesday I decided to post it on my blog. So from now on when I'm explaining orange plastic deer heads to a confused crowd I can just say "uhh, just go to my blog". And p.s. I'm still not opposed to the furry one's.

Environmental Bag Lady

I have been sewing tote bags for a couple of years now; baby bags, bridesmaid's bags, etc. But until now I had never sewn myself a grocery bag, although my stomach turns every time I go to the grocery store and take home another plastic bag.

And since I had tons of bags under my kitchen sink I decided to put them to good use. Unfortunately I did not come up with the genius idea on my own, I found the how to on the Etsy website. First I cut off the handles and then I folded the bags into strips. Then I placed them in between two sheets of wax paper and ironed.
I used my trusty old patten to piece the bag together and there you have it. My new, 100% recycled, grocery bag. I am excited to use it on my next trup to Schnuck's. Bryan is currently refusing to carry it due it's feminine appearance, but I've ensured him it will be the coolest man bag in Memphis.

The Glass Castle

I just finished reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. I had seen Walls on Oprah (becoming a theme on this blog) a few months ago and didn't realize that she was the author of this book until I was about half way through.
I thought the book overall was very good. I am originally from West Virginia and still have a great deal of family who live in rural parts of the Appalachian Mountains so situations and stories she describes rang very close to home for me.
The story, narrated by Walls, describes a nomadic family on an endless journey around the southwest in search of money, food, and fulfillment...none of which find them with ease. When resources run out they return to the hometown of their alcoholic father in Welch, WV. Through seemingly endless disappointment Walls perseveres to become the author I saw on Oprah. It was a very touching and miraculous story- Good Read.

Pick Your Favorite Doll...
They showed this video today in church today. It was produced by a 17 year old, Kira Davis, in 2005. It is a modern version of a 1950's experiment conducted by Dr. Kenneth Clark where black children are asked to choose between a white doll and black doll. The reality that these sweet little children bring to your attention is unsettling to say the least.
